SMG Case Study: Developing Top Management Leadership Skills

The Challenge

The top managers and executives for a global leader in the electronics industry needed to develop excellent leadership skills for the company to maintain its position in an increasingly competitive market. Many of the company's leaders possessed these skills already, but there was no internal system to allow them to benchmark their competencies and identify areas for improvement. The client determined that it needed a learning solution that would teach its top managers the skills the organization would need to remain successful. The solution would also require an assessment component to determine existing skill levels and areas for development.

SMG’s Solution

SMG worked closely with the client to develop a team-based seminar featuring a powerful leadership simulation. Each team was presented with a clearly defined set of leadership concepts, such as Building Business Strategies, Aligning the Organization, Accelerating Change and Learning, and Leading People Across Countries and Cultures. Then, after each set of concepts had been presented, the teams were given exercises specifically created to maximize the impact of what they had just learned. After the concepts and exercises were completed, the teams were given the opportunity to apply their skills in the simulation.

The simulation placed participants in leadership roles of a fictional organization. Learners attempted to implement a strategic initiative while encountering many of the obstacles they could reasonably expect to face in a changing, technology-driven business environment. The simulation's built-in assessment tool also enabled participants to see where their skills were strongest as well as where they were weakest. Together, the client and SMG mapped out a personalized action plan for each participant to maximize individual skill potential.

Results

As a direct result of SMG's solution, the client's managers and executives reported that they came away with a much better grasp of leadership concepts. Even experienced managers said it was a much-needed refresher. Many of the company's leaders learned that they were strong or weak in areas that they had not suspected.
