SMG Case Study: Decreasing Product Development Time

The Challenge

A large multinational pharmaceutical client wanted to decrease the time it took to develop its products and get them to market. By definition, developing pharmaceuticals for human consumption is a lengthy process, but the client felt that some internal processes were slowing development for no reason. Having worked successfully with SMG in the past, the client wanted a solution to help its development staff accelerate the process.

SMG’s Solution

With the help of the client's subject matter experts, SMG designed and developed a fully-customized, simulation-based solution that helped the client's development teams balance the need for speedy development with the project's budget and ultimate commercial return.

The simulation placed participants in the role of a project leader, where they made decisions relative to a fictional product release. Participants learned to anticipate the ambiguities and uncertainties involved in any drug development process, as well as the importance of aligning the project with the strategic goals of the company. The simulation also reinforced the concept of preparing all the pertinent data for a project before entering key checkpoints in the process.

Participants interacted with committees and characters just as they would in the course of their everyday jobs. Using the information they gathered from these interactions, as well as other data provided through online resources and reports, participants made decisions in scenario-based situations that mirrored the drug development process. Participants absorbed the consequences of their decisions through extensive feedback. This was provided through instantaneous, storyline-based scenes, as well as written feedback delivered at the end of the program.

Results

After the solution was delivered to the client's development staff, the client reported a clear improvement in the drug development process. Measurable improvement was shown in teams' ability to weigh the disparate elements of development projects before making key decisions in the process. As a result, development began to run more efficiently and effectively.
